One of the most iconic vehicles ever produced, the Volkswagen Type II, or Samba or Bus as they’re more commonly known, has served millions around the world. One of the most sought-after Type IIs is the 21-window bus, like this one. Delivered new to Los Angeles, California, this 21-window Deluxe Samba 21-Window Microbus emerged in its original body configuration from a comprehensive restoration completed in 2022 that included a bare metal respray in 2022 in its original two-tone colors of L555 Tizian Red and L472 Beige-Grey. Even the underbody has been freshly painted, and new bumpers with overriders have been painted gray and white. The 15-inch Porsche Fuchs wheels wrapped with new Vredestein tires lend the first hint that this bus isn’t as it left the factory.

The flat-4 engine typically found in the Type II has been swapped for a 2.4L flat 6-cylinder engine from a 1973 Porsche 911E featuring mechanical fuel injection with new Bosch injectors. That engine’s backed by a Volkswagen transaxle rebuilt by Arizona Buggy Co. to accommodate up to 300 HP. Front disc brakes and a new suspension have been added to provide a bit of yin to the yang of the more powerful engine, while the entire van benefits from a new gas tank, fuel lines and brake lines.

Like the exterior, the interior also received a comprehensive restoration, emerging with 70 Mesh Platinum upholstery offset by gray vinyl trim and steel surfaces finished in L472 Beige-Grey. It’s fitted with rare walk-through front seats, and the dark red seat belts are rounded out with Wolfsburg crests upon the buckles. Accompanied by a Bill of Sale from 1987, a copy of the original Volkswagen Birth Certificate from Volkswagen Headquarters in Wolfsburg, Germany, a Porsche 911 owner’s workshop manual and restoration and service invoices and receipts, this 1967 Volkswagen Type II 21-Window Bus brings a lot more to the table than meets the eye.
